How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?+

A 60 kWh battery at €0.15/kWh costs about €9 for a full charge, giving ~350 km. At night on an off-peak tariff it's even cheaper.

Is it still cheaper than petrol?+

Almost always. 100 km charging at home costs ~€2.5–3 vs ~€9–11 for an equivalent combustion car.

How much does charging at a fast public point change things?+

A lot: fast charging on motorways usually costs €0.40–0.60/kWh, versus ~€0.15/kWh at home. Regularly charging in public can triple or quadruple the cost per kilometre. Enter the point's real price to see your exact cost.

How do I work out a partial charge, say from 20 to 80%?+

Multiply the kWh you add by the kWh price. Going from 20 to 80% on a 60 kWh battery is 60% of its capacity: 36 kWh, which at €0.15/kWh costs €5.40.

What range does a full charge give?+

Range = battery ÷ consumption × 100. With 60 kWh and consumption of 17 kWh/100km that's about 353 km. The real figure varies with speed, temperature and driving style.

What consumption should I enter if I don't know it?+

A typical EV uses between 15 and 20 kWh/100km; the calculator starts from 17. The best figure is the average consumption shown by your car's trip computer.

How much does a kilometre cost in an EV?+

Cost per km = consumption × price ÷ 100. At 17 kWh/100km and €0.15/kWh, about €0.026/km (€2.55 per 100 km); on fast charging at €0.55/kWh it rises to €9.35 per 100 km.

The formula: kWh times price, like filling a tank

A charge's cost is worked out like a fuel fill-up, swapping litres for kWh: cost = kWh charged × kWh price. For a full charge (0→100%), the kWh equal the battery capacity: with the defaults — 60 kWh at €0.15/kWh — that's €9.00.

For a partial charge, just multiply the kWh you actually add: going from 20 to 80% on that same battery is 36 kWh, i.e. €5.40. The calculator also gives you the cost per 100 km (consumption × price) and the estimated range on a full battery.

With the defaults you'll see all three cards at once: €9.00 for the full charge, €2.55 per 100 km and 353 km of range. Change the kWh price and you'll see everything scale in proportion: that's the beauty of such a simple formula.

Home or fast charger: the kWh price is (almost) everything

The price spread is huge. At home, a kWh usually costs between €0.10 and €0.20; at a fast charging point en route, between €0.40 and €0.70. Same battery; very different bill.

  • Regularly charging at fast public points can triple or quadruple the cost per kilometre. The cheap strategy is simple: home (ideally off-peak) for daily use, and fast charging only for trips.

What 100 km costs — and what you'd spend on petrol

The cost per 100 km is consumption × kWh price. A typical EV uses between 15 and 20 kWh/100km: at €0.15/kWh that's €2.25–3.00 per 100 km; with the default consumption (17 kWh), €2.55 — about 2.6 cents per kilometre.

An equivalent combustion car runs at around €9–11 per 100 km: charging at home, the gap is €6.45–8.45 per 100 km, which over 10,000 km a year adds up to €645–845 in energy alone. Estimated range: battery divided by consumption

Range comes from the same pair of inputs: battery ÷ consumption × 100. With 60 kWh and 17 kWh/100km, 353 km; at a consumption of 15, about 400 km; at 20, about 300 km.

Real consumption — and therefore range — depends on speed, temperature and driving style. To sharpen the estimate, use the average consumption shown by the trip computer, not the brochure figure.

Charging cheaper: timing matters

At night, on an off-peak tariff, the domestic kWh sits at the bottom of the range: at €0.10/kWh, a full 60 kWh charge stays at €6.00 and 100 km at €1.70. The most convenient pattern — charging overnight at home and leaving every morning with the battery where you want it — is also the cheapest.

The logic is the same as with petrol: whoever compares prices before 'filling up' pays less. And if you alternate between an EV and a combustion car, also keep an eye on the price per litre on the fuel-price map and prices by autonomous community to know what you'd pay at the pump.
